Lake Vyrnwy Powys, Wales Tel 01691 870278 Around man-made Lake Vyrnwy (pronounced “Verng”) are woodland nature trails, and there are birdwatching hides by the lakeside. The whole shore of the reservoir is viewable from a car. Surrounding the lake is a large RSPB nature reserve with most of the birds of the Welsh borders. Highlights include redstart, siskin, crossbill, raven, hen harrier, ring ouzel, and red squirrel. There is a visitor centre. The garden features some fine topiary, shrubbery, rockery, and borders. An 18th-century landscaped park is fun to explore. Educational facilities and a programme of events are also available.
